Although the trek is possible throughout the whole winter, the best seasons for the Gangte Trek are March to May and September to November. It is a short and relatively easy trek with beautiful villages and monasteries en route.

Arrive Paro by Druk Air flight. During this flight, one will experience breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Kanchen Junga and other Himalayan peaks including the sacred Chomolhari and Mt. Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro our representative will receive you. The drive to hotel through Paro valley is enchanting. After lunch you will be taken to Ta-dzong (museum). Overnight at hotel.

This morning follow the winding road beside the Pa chu (chu means river of water) down stream to its confluence with the Wangchu, then up-valley to Thimphu, the capital. After lunch visit the Memorial Chhorten, here the faithful circumambulate the shrine dedicated to the Late King. Overnight in hotel.

After breakfast leave for Gangtey. The road winds through the forests to dochula (la means pass), where in good weather almost 200 of the Himalayan summits are in view. After driving 3 hours you will reach Wangdue. Lunch at Wangdue. After a further 3 hours drive you will reach Gangtey. Overnight in camp.

Distance 15km, six to seven hours, 610m ascent, 410m descent, camp altitude 3,130m)

The Trek starts near the village of Tabiting. The trail winds through meadows and fields and the climb takes you through a mixed forest of juniper, bamboo, magnolia and rhododendron to Tsele La (3430m). From here you descend into the Juge Kangkha Chhu valley. Further on, the path leads to Gogona, well know for its “Gogona Cheese” production. The campsite is a bit further on besides a small stream in a yak pasture called Zasa.

Distance 16km, five to seven hours, 450m ascent, 860m descent, camp altitude 3,330m.

A gentle climb leads to Shobe La pass (3,480m). The descent from the pass leads to a wide valley, surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges.  Below the route one can see Khothokha, a village with about 60 houses. You finally reach the campsite by climbing gently up till you see four chortens in a forest of blue pine.

Distance 12km, four to five hours, 120m ascent, 1,340m descent.

From the camp you climb till you reach a forest road. From here it’s an easy walk up to a little ridge at 2,800m. The walk down back into the valley leads you through Bhutan’s best bird watching areas. Drive to Thimphu for overnight stay.

After breakfast drive to Paro. Check into hotel

After lunch Hike up to the Taktsang monastery (Tiger’s nest). The climb up to the view point will take around three hours. Enjoy the stunning view of the monastery, where Guru Padmasambava landed on the back of a tiger in the 8th century, and mediated for three months. The monastery was later built in this holy place in 1684.
